Up the Sutlej through Kinnaur's cliff roads to Nako and Tabo, and into Spiti. Longer than the Manali side, but it lets you climb slowly and acclimatise.

Good two-lane road to Rampur, then the Kinnaur stretch: narrow roads cut into cliffs, and slide zones that can close for hours. Around Malling near Nako the road is often loose and broken. Fill up at Reckong Peo; there is no reliable pump from there to Kaza.
