Most Indian cities make you ride two hours of highway before anything interesting happens. Chandigarh does not. The Shivaliks start at the edge of Panchkula, Himachal begins at Parwanoo, and a rider leaving Sector 17 at six can be on a hairpin above the clouds by eight. That is what makes bike trips from Chandigarh different: almost every good one climbs.

This list gives you ten of them, sorted by distance, from a 20 km loop you can do before work to a full day up to Hatu Peak at 3,400 m. Each one has the road you take out of the city, an honest ride time, and the local detail that decides whether the day goes well.

Two things before you plan anything. Weekend traffic into Himachal is real. NH5 past Parwanoo crawls on Saturday mornings and crawls even worse on Sunday afternoons, when half of Delhi and Punjab is heading home. And monsoon changes everything here. From July to early September, the stretch around Chakki Mod near Parwanoo and many smaller hill roads see regular landslides, so check the road before you leave, not after.

Bike trip distances from Chandigarh

Road distances for these trips from Chandigarh are measured from Sector 17, one way. Ride times assume an early start, a normal pace and one chai stop.

Short trips, under 70 km

  • Siswan and Mirzapur | about 20 km | 40 minutes | the Shivalik loop before breakfast
  • Pinjore Gardens | about 22 km | 45 minutes | a Mughal garden and the old temple ruins
  • Morni Hills and Tikkar Taal | about 45 km | 1.5 hours | Haryana's only hill station
  • Kasauli | about 57 km | 1.75 hours | the classic first climb into Himachal
  • Dagshai and Barog | about 60 km | 1.75 hours | an old cantonment jail and a famous tunnel

Full day, 70 to 130 km

  • Anandpur Sahib and Bhakra | about 80 to 110 km | 2 to 2.5 hours | history, and the big dam
  • Nahan and Renuka Ji | about 80 to 120 km | 2 to 3 hours | a royal town and Himachal's largest lake
  • Chail | about 110 km | 3 hours | a palace and the world's highest cricket ground
  • Shimla | about 115 km | 3 to 3.5 hours | the old summer capital, done properly

The far edge

  • Narkanda and Hatu Peak | about 180 to 188 km | 5.5 to 6 hours | the highest point you can reach and ride home from

Most of these rides share NH5, the Kalka-Shimla highway. It is four-lane up to Kaithlighat now, which makes the climb to Solan quick, but it also means fast cars and buses cutting across lanes on blind curves. Ride it like a mountain road, even where it looks like a highway.

Short bike trips from Chandigarh

1. Siswan and Mirzapur

Distance: About 20 km one way | Ride time: 40 minutes | Best for: A ride before work

Take the Chandigarh-Baddi road out past Mullanpur and within twenty minutes the houses give way to scrub hills, seasonal streams and the small Siswan dam, set inside a Punjab forest department community reserve. Keep going toward Mirzapur and the road narrows into the Shivalik foothills, quiet enough on a weekday morning that you may not see another vehicle.

It is not a destination ride. Of all the trips from Chandigarh, it is the one locals do most often, the loop they use to warm up a new bike, test a new helmet or just get an hour of curves before the city wakes up.

Rider tip: The seasonal streams cross the road in places after rain. Slow right down for any water you cannot see the bottom of.

2. Pinjore Gardens

Distance: About 22 km one way | Ride time: 45 minutes | Best for: An easy morning with something to see

The Yadavindra Gardens at Pinjore are a 17th century Mughal garden laid out in terraces, with water channels running down through them. Go early, walk the terraces while they are empty, and then find the Bhima Devi temple site nearby, where carved stones from old temples are laid out in the open.

It is a relaxed first ride for anyone new to riding, and a good one to take a pillion on.

Rider tip: The Kalka road through Pinjore is slow and full of trucks by mid-morning. Be back on the bypass before ten.

3. Morni Hills and Tikkar Taal

Distance: About 45 km one way | Ride time: 1.5 hours | Best for: Twisties without leaving Haryana

Morni is Haryana's only hill station, and the road up is one of the best short rides near the city. Out through Panchkula, past the Nada Sahib gurudwara, and the road starts climbing in tight, clean curves through pine and scrub. The small Morni fort sits near the top, and about 7 km further are the twin lakes of Tikkar Taal, with boating and a Haryana Tourism cafe.

Of all the bike trips from Chandigarh, this is the one to learn hill riding on. The road is narrow but not dangerous, and the traffic is light outside Sundays.

Rider tip: The inside of the hairpins collects gravel and fallen pine needles. Stay wide on the way down and brake before the bend, not in it.

4. Kasauli

Distance: About 57 km one way | Ride time: 1.75 hours | Best for: The first real climb into Himachal

Of all the trips from Chandigarh into Himachal, Kasauli is the one most riders do first. Cross into Himachal at Parwanoo, climb NH5 to Dharampur, then turn off onto the narrow road up to the cantonment town. Christ Church from 1844, the upper and lower Malls, and the long view back down to the plains make it a proper morning out.

Monkey Point, the highest spot, sits inside an Air Force station. Phones and cameras stay at the gate, you need ID, and it is usually open only from about 9 am to 5 pm, so check before you promise anyone a photo from the top.

Rider tip: The last few kilometres from Dharampur are narrow and patchy, and on weekends the parking in town fills early. Arrive before ten or park lower down and walk.

5. Dagshai and Barog

Distance: About 60 km one way | Ride time: 1.75 hours | Best for: History, and fewer people than Kasauli

Just across the ridge from Kasauli, Dagshai is one of the oldest cantonments in the hills, dating to 1847. Its old jail is now a small museum, cells and all, with short opening hours split around lunch. A few kilometres on, Barog is known for the longest tunnel on the Kalka-Shimla railway, a UNESCO World Heritage line, and for the local story of the British engineer it is named after.

Park near Barog station, watch the toy train go in, and have chai while you wait for it to come out the other side.

Rider tip: Dagshai is still an active cantonment. Some roads are restricted, and photography near army areas is not allowed.

Full-day bike trips from Chandigarh

6. Anandpur Sahib and Bhakra

Distance: About 80 to 110 km one way | Ride time: 2 to 2.5 hours | Best for: A flat, easy day with a lot to see

The flattest of the full-day trips from Chandigarh heads north through Kurali and Ropar, with the Sutlej beside you for part of the way, to Anandpur Sahib. Takht Sri Kesgarh Sahib is one of the five Sikh takhts, and Virasat-e-Khalsa, the museum just opposite, is one of the best-designed museums in the country. Entry is free, it is closed on Mondays, and it needs at least two hours.

Ride another 20 km or so to Nangal for the Sutlej and the approach to Bhakra, one of the tallest gravity dams in India.

Rider tip: Visiting the dam itself needs a pass from the Bhakra Beas Management Board and valid ID, and the rules change with security conditions. Treat the dam as a bonus, not the plan. Avoid Hola Mohalla week in March unless you want to be part of the crowd.

7. Nahan and Renuka Ji

Distance: About 80 to 120 km one way | Ride time: 2 to 3 hours | Best for: A quieter corner of Himachal

Southeast through Panchkula and the industrial town of Kala Amb, then a climb to Nahan, the old capital of Sirmaur, a hill town of old gates, a big open ground called the Chaugan and far fewer tourists than anything on NH5. Carry on about 40 km on the Dadahu road to Renuka Ji, the largest natural lake in Himachal, with a temple on its shore.

The road after Nahan is narrow and green, and on a weekday it is one of the most peaceful trips from Chandigarh on this list.

Rider tip: Take the Nahan road both ways. Locals will tell you the road from Paonta Sahib to Renuka Ji is in poor shape, and they are right.

8. Chail

Distance: About 110 km one way | Ride time: 3 hours | Best for: Forest roads and a palace at the end

NH5 up to Kandaghat, then the Chail road climbs through deodar and oak forest to the town the Maharaja of Patiala built as his summer retreat. The palace is now an HPTDC hotel, and the cricket ground, at around 2,444 m, is known as the highest in the world. It belongs to the Chail Military School, so you usually see it from outside the fence.

If you have the time, come back via the forest road to Kufri and down through Shimla. It turns the ride into a loop and is one of the prettiest stretches in the Solan hills.

Rider tip: Chail sits high enough to be properly cold even in April. Pack a layer, even if Chandigarh is at 38°C when you leave.

9. Shimla

Distance: About 115 km one way | Ride time: 3 to 3.5 hours | Best for: The classic, on a weekday

Shimla is a destination more than a ride, but it belongs on any list of day trips from Chandigarh because the climb is what everyone does first. The four-lane road now runs up to Kaithlighat, and the stretch beyond it was still being widened in 2026, so expect some slow sections near the top.

Once there, remember that the Mall and the Ridge are closed to vehicles. Park on Cart Road, take the lift up, and walk.

Rider tip: Do Shimla on a weekday. On Sundays the ride down to Parwanoo can take two hours longer than the ride up. Keep your bag zipped and your food out of sight too, because Shimla's monkeys know exactly what a tank bag is.

The far edge

10. Narkanda and Hatu Peak

Distance: About 180 to 188 km one way | Ride time: 5.5 to 6 hours | Best for: Experienced riders who start at 4 am

This is the far edge of one day trips from Chandigarh, and only worth it with a pre-dawn start. Past Shimla, NH5 runs through Kufri and Theog to Narkanda, an apple-country town in the pines. From there a narrow road climbs about 8 km to Hatu Peak at around 3,400 m, with an old wooden temple at the top and a view straight across to the snow ranges.

It is around 370 km in a day, most of it on hill roads, and you will feel every one of them.

Rider tip: From December to March the Hatu road can be under snow and the stretch after Shimla can have black ice in the mornings. In winter, turn around at Narkanda and save Hatu for spring.

Bike trips from Chandigarh for a weekend

Some of the best trips from Chandigarh need a night away. If you can stay over, these are the ones worth planning for.

  • Tirthan and Jibhi | about 250 km | through the Aut tunnel and into a quiet valley of trout streams and wooden villages
  • Manali | about 300 km | the big one, better as a two or three day trip. Read our Manali bike trip guide before you go
  • Spiti from the Kinnaur side | a week or more | start through Shimla and Narkanda, then take your time. The winter Spiti prep guide covers the cold-season version

Planning your trips from Chandigarh

Run through this the night before.

Checklist
  • Tyres checked for pressure and tread
  • Brakes checked, front and rear, because hills punish tired pads
  • Tank full before Parwanoo
  • Licence, RC, insurance and PUC on you
  • Full gear, and a warm layer even in summer
  • Water and something to eat
  • Road status checked in the monsoon
  • Route and return time shared with someone at home

A few more things that decide how the day goes:

  • Use the engine on the way down. On long descents like Kasauli to Dharampur or Shimla to Solan, drop a gear and let the engine hold the bike. Riding the brakes all the way down overheats them. A full pre-ride checklist catches worn pads before the hills do.
  • Expect buses on the wrong side. Himachal buses take corners wide and fast. Keep left on blind bends and never overtake where you cannot see.
  • Check the entry rules at Parwanoo. Himachal collects an entry fee from many outside-registered vehicles at its border barriers, and the rates were revised in April 2026. Check the current rule for bikes before you go.
  • Wear the gear. Cool mountain air makes it tempting to ride in a hoodie. If you are still building your kit, start with the essentials for beginners.
  • Be honest about the distance. Hatu Peak and back is around 370 km of hill road. If that is new territory, read how to pick a ride that matches your skill level first.
  • Riding in a group? Agree the pace, the stops and the sweep rider before you leave. Our group riding guide covers the rest.

When to go

Chandigarh has an unusual advantage: the hills are best exactly when the city is worst. From April to June the plains hit 40°C, and Kasauli, Chail and Narkanda are 10 to 15 degrees cooler. October and November are the sweet spot for trips from Chandigarh, with clear air, dry roads and the mountains visible from Kasauli.

July to mid-September is landslide season. Short rides like Morni and Siswan are lovely and green, but the hill roads into Himachal need checking every single day. December to February brings dense fog to the plains in the early mornings and snow above Shimla, so leave later and keep the high rides for clear days.

Common questions

Which is the best bike trip from Chandigarh for a beginner?

Morni Hills. It is 45 km away, the climb is short and not too steep, and the traffic is light outside Sundays. Pinjore is even easier if you have never ridden out of the city at all. If you have not done a highway run yet, read the mistakes new riders make on their first highway ride first.

Are there good bike rides within 50 km of Chandigarh?

Yes. Siswan and Mirzapur at about 20 km, Pinjore at about 22 km and Morni at about 45 km are all quick trips from Chandigarh that you can finish by lunch.

How far is Kasauli from Chandigarh by bike?

About 57 km, which takes around one and three quarter hours with a short stop. Most of it is NH5 to Dharampur, then a narrow climb for the last stretch.

Can you ride from Chandigarh to Shimla and back in one day?

Yes, it is around 230 km round trip. Leave by six, reach Shimla by nine, and start back by two. On a Sunday, the return traffic is the part that makes it a long day, not the distance.

What time should I leave Chandigarh for a ride into the hills?

By 6 am for anything on NH5. You beat the weekend traffic at Parwanoo, you get the clearest views of the day, and you are heading home before the afternoon rush builds.

Find your riding day

The hard part of most trips from Chandigarh is not the climb. It is getting a group to agree on a Sunday, a route and a start time, and then getting everyone to Zirakpur before six. That is what RydrLoop is built for. Post the ride, find riders heading the same way, and turn a plan into a group that actually leaves on time.

If you are riding from somewhere else, the same idea works out of Delhi, Mumbai, Pune and Bangalore.

Pick a hill, set the alarm, and be past Parwanoo before the traffic is.
