2-Day Bike Trips from Bangalore: 8 Weekend Rides Worth Planning
Coffee hills, forest gates and hairpins you need a whole weekend for. Eight 2-day bike trips from Bangalore with distances, timings and the new entry rules.

A day ride from Bangalore gets you to Nandi or Shivanasamudra and back for dinner. A weekend gets you somewhere else entirely: the coffee hills of Coorg and Chikmagalur, the forests of Wayanad and Bandipur, the Nilgiris, or the boulder country of Hampi. The best 2-day bike trips from Bangalore all sit in that 200 to 350 km band, far enough to feel like a trip and close enough to ride home on Sunday without hating it.
This guide covers eight of them. Each has the distance, the realistic ride time, where to base yourself, what to ride on Sunday morning before heading home, and the rules that now decide how these trips work. That last part matters more than it used to. Forest gates close at night, the Nilgiris need an e-pass, the Chikmagalur peaks need an online vehicle pass, and one famous ghat has been closed to outside vehicles.
Before anything else: bikes have not been allowed on the main carriageway of the Bengaluru-Mysuru Expressway since August 2023, so every ride through Mysuru starts on the service roads and the old highway. Budget an extra hour for that.
How a 2-day trip from Bangalore works
The pattern that works for almost every one of these trips from Bangalore is simple.
- Saturday, leave by 5:30. You clear Nelamangala, Hosur road or Mysuru road before the traffic, and you arrive by lunch with the afternoon to ride locally.
- Ride the good roads on Saturday afternoon. The best local loops and ghats are more fun without luggage and before you are tired.
- Sunday, ride out by 10 or 11. Coming back into Bangalore on a Sunday evening means joining everyone else at Nelamangala, Attibele and the Mysuru road. Aim to be home by five.
- Know the gates. Several of these routes pass through forests that close at night. Miss the gate and your trip gains an unplanned night.
Weekend bike trip distances from Bangalore
Road distances for these trips from Bangalore are measured from the city centre, one way. Ride times are realistic weekend times with breaks, not what a map app shows at 3 am.
- Sakleshpur | about 220 km | 5 hours | the quiet side of the Western Ghats
- Yercaud | about 230 km | 5 hours | an easy highway ride to 20 hairpins
- Kabini | about 210 km | 5 hours | elephants and river backwaters
- Chikmagalur | about 242 km | 5.5 hours | coffee estates and Karnataka's highest peak
- Coorg | about 245 km | 6 hours | coffee country and the Kaveri's source
- Ooty | about 280 km | 7 hours | through Bandipur and up to the Nilgiris
- Wayanad | about 280 km | 6.5 hours | forest roads and rice terraces in Kerala
- Hampi | about 344 km | 8 hours | a ruined empire among the boulders
The eight weekend trips from Bangalore
1. Sakleshpur
Distance: About 220 km one way | Ride time: 5 hours | Best for: The Western Ghats without the crowds
NH75 out through Nelamangala, Kunigal and Hassan is a smooth, mostly four-lane highway, and Sakleshpur is where it starts to drop into the Ghats. The town is surrounded by coffee and cardamom estates, homestays and misty hills, and of all the weekend trips from Bangalore into the Ghats, it gets the least traffic.
Where to base: An estate homestay outside town. Sunday morning: Ride to Manjarabad fort at sunrise. It is a small star-shaped fort on a hilltop, and from the top you can see why Tipu Sultan chose the spot.
Rider tip: The Shiradi ghat beyond Sakleshpur is often under repair and can close in heavy rain. Treat it as a road to check, not a road to ride on a whim. In the monsoon, carry salt or a leech sock for walks, because the estates are full of leeches.

2. Yercaud
Distance: About 230 km one way | Ride time: 5 hours | Best for: An easy first weekend trip
Down Hosur road into Tamil Nadu, past Krishnagiri and Dharmapuri to Salem, then a 20-hairpin climb up to Yercaud. The highway is wide and easy for almost all of it, which makes this the most forgiving of the weekend trips from Bangalore for a newer rider. The climb at the end is short, well surfaced and properly fun.
Where to base: Yercaud town or a hotel on the lake. Sunday morning: Ride the 32 km loop road around the hill through coffee estates and small villages, then Pagoda Point for the view.
Rider tip: Hosur road leaves the city past the Electronic City flyover, which charges bikes a toll. The free road underneath works fine at dawn. On Sunday evenings, the Attibele border crossing back into Karnataka can be very slow, so leave Yercaud before noon.
3. Kabini
Distance: About 210 km one way | Ride time: 5 hours | Best for: Wildlife, and a lazy weekend
Kabini sits on the backwaters between Nagarhole and Bandipur, reached through Mysuru and HD Kote. It is one of the best places in South India to see elephants, and the river safaris and jungle drives here book out weeks ahead in the dry season. It is the slowest of these trips from Bangalore, and that is the point.
Where to base: A lodge or homestay near Kabini, and book it early. Kabini is not cheap. Sunday morning: An early boat safari or jungle drive, then a slow ride home after breakfast.
Rider tip: Forest roads around Nagarhole close at night, and elephants cross them during the day too. If a herd is on the road, stop well back and wait. Never rev the engine at them or try to squeeze past.
4. Chikmagalur
Distance: About 242 km one way | Ride time: 5.5 hours | Best for: Coffee estates and the highest peak in Karnataka
Out on NH75, then through Hassan or Belur, and into the coffee hills. Chikmagalur is where coffee first came to India, and the road up to Mullayanagiri, the highest peak in Karnataka at around 1,930 m, is one of the best short climbs in the state.
Where to base: An estate stay near town or on the Mullayanagiri side. Sunday morning: Mullayanagiri at sunrise, if you have the pass.
Rider tip: Since September 2025, vehicles going up to Mullayanagiri and Baba Budangiri need an online entry pass from the district's booking portal. Entry is limited to about 600 vehicles a day across two slots, and weekend slots fill up. Book it before you leave Bangalore, not at the checkpost.

5. Coorg
Distance: About 245 km one way | Ride time: 6 hours | Best for: The classic coffee country weekend
Through Mysuru on the service roads, then NH275 through Hunsur and Kushalnagar and up into Kodagu. Stop at Bylakuppe on the way for the Tibetan settlement and its Golden Temple. Madikeri is the hub, with the Raja's Seat viewpoint, and the ride to Talakaveri, where the Kaveri begins, is one of the prettiest hill roads in Karnataka. It is the most popular of the weekend trips from Bangalore for good reason.
Where to base: Madikeri, or a homestay in the estates around it. Sunday morning: Ride to Talakaveri and Bhagamandala early, before the tourist cars.
Rider tip: The main roads into Coorg are good, but the inner estate roads are narrow, broken in places and steep. In the monsoon they turn slick with moss and mud, so go slow and keep your eyes on the surface.

6. Ooty
Distance: About 280 km one way | Ride time: 7 hours | Best for: The Nilgiris, through two tiger reserves
This is the most scenic of the trips from Bangalore on this list, and the one with the most rules. Mysuru, then Gundlupet, and then the best part: the road through Bandipur and Mudumalai, where you can see elephants, deer and, with luck, a gaur or a tiger from the highway. After Theppakadu, climb through Gudalur and Naduvattam to Ooty.
Where to base: Ooty, or quieter Coonoor if you want to ride on. Sunday morning: Doddabetta early, or the Pykara road, then ride out in time to clear the forests.
Rider tip: This trip now has three rules. First, every outstation vehicle entering the Nilgiris, bikes included, needs a free e-pass from the Tamil Nadu portal, and daily limits apply on weekends. Second, the Bandipur and Mudumalai stretch is closed to traffic from 9 pm to 6 am, and some reports say two-wheelers are stopped from as early as 6 pm. Third, the famous 36-hairpin Kalhatti ghat via Masinagudi was reported closed to non-local vehicles from April 2026, so plan on the Gudalur route and check before you go.
7. Wayanad
Distance: About 280 km one way | Ride time: 6.5 hours | Best for: Forest roads and Kerala's high country
Two ways in. Through Mysuru and Gundlupet you cross Bandipur into Sulthan Bathery, and the same night closure applies. Through Mysuru, HD Kote and the Bavali gate, you ride through the Nagarhole forest to Mananthavady. That gate closes from 6 pm to 6 am, so plan your timing around it.
Where to base: Kalpetta, Sulthan Bathery or a homestay in the rice terraces. Sunday morning: Edakkal caves if it is not a Monday, when they are usually closed, or Banasura Sagar dam, then ride out early enough to clear the forest gate.
Rider tip: Kerala's AI cameras record helmet and triple-riding offences, so make sure your pillion's helmet is on and strapped even on quiet village roads.
8. Hampi
Distance: About 344 km one way | Ride time: 8 hours | Best for: The biggest ride on this list
Up NH48 toward Chitradurga, then on to Hosapete and Hampi, the ruined capital of the Vijayanagara empire, spread across a landscape of giant boulders beside the Tungabhadra. It is the longest of the trips from Bangalore here, a flat and hot haul, and the distance is the only real challenge.
Where to base: Hampi village or Hosapete. Sunday morning: Sunrise from Matanga hill or Hemakuta, then the Vittala temple before the heat.
Rider tip: Honestly, Hampi is better as a three-day trip. If two days is all you have, ride out Friday night to Chitradurga, and do not attempt it from March to May, when the rocks radiate heat all day.

The rules that decide these weekends
Most bad weekends on these trips from Bangalore come from rules riders did not know about. Here they are in one place, as of September 2026. Check again before you go, because they change.
- Bengaluru-Mysuru Expressway: closed to bikes on the main carriageway. Use the service roads.
- Bandipur and Mudumalai: closed from 9 pm to 6 am, possibly earlier for two-wheelers.
- Bavali gate, Nagarhole: closed from 6 pm to 6 am.
- Nilgiris e-pass: needed for all outstation vehicles, including bikes, with daily limits.
- Kalhatti ghat via Masinagudi: reported closed to non-local vehicles since April 2026.
- Mullayanagiri and Baba Budangiri: online vehicle pass, about 600 vehicles a day in two slots.
- Electronic City flyover and NICE Road: tolls for bikes, unlike national highway plazas.
Planning your 2-day trips from Bangalore
Run through this before Saturday.
- Tyres checked for pressure and tread
- Chain cleaned and lubed, brakes checked
- Passes booked: Nilgiris e-pass or Mullayanagiri slot if needed
- Stay booked, especially for Coorg, Chikmagalur and Kabini
- Licence, RC, insurance and PUC on you
- Rain gear from June to November
- Luggage that is strapped properly and not blocking your lights
- Route, stops and forest gate timings shared with someone at home
A few more things that decide how the weekend goes:
- Fill up before the forests. Bandipur, Nagarhole and the estate roads have few pumps. A full pre-ride checklist the night before catches most problems.
- Ride with a puncture kit. The ghats are full of loose nails and stones, and our tyre guide and breakdown guide cover how to deal with a flat far from a shop.
- Respect the second day. Fatigue hits on the Sunday ride home, not Saturday morning. Our long distance riding guide covers how to pace it.
- Carrying a pillion? Two days with a passenger is a different weekend. Read riding with a pillion first.
- Riding in a group? Share the forest gate timings with everyone, not just the lead, so nobody pushes the pace to beat a closing gate. Our group riding guide covers the rest.
When to go
October to February is the best season for weekend trips from Bangalore. The Ghats are green after the monsoon, the mornings are cool and the waterfalls are still running. March to May is hot in the plains, which makes Hampi and Yercaud hard work, though the Nilgiris and Coorg stay pleasant. June to September is the monsoon, when Sakleshpur, Coorg and Wayanad are at their greenest and their roads are at their most slippery. Ride then only with good tyres, proper rain gear and a willingness to turn back.
Common questions
Which is the best 2-day bike trip from Bangalore for a first timer?
Yercaud. It is about 230 km, almost all of it on a wide highway, and the 20 hairpins at the end are a gentle introduction to ghat riding. Chikmagalur is a good next step.
Do I need an e-pass to ride to Ooty from Bangalore?
Yes. Every outstation vehicle entering the Nilgiris needs a free e-pass from the Tamil Nadu government portal, and bikes are included. On weekends the daily limit can fill up, so apply the day before.
What time does the Bandipur road close?
The forest stretch through Bandipur and Mudumalai is closed to traffic from 9 pm to 6 am, and some reports say two-wheelers are stopped from 6 pm. Plan to cross in daylight.
Can I ride through Coorg in the monsoon?
Yes, with care. The main roads stay open most days, but inner estate roads get slippery, and landslides can close hill roads after very heavy rain. Check the district's alerts and keep your speed down.
Which of these weekend rides is best for a group?
Chikmagalur and Coorg. The distances are manageable for mixed groups, there are plenty of homestays that can take eight or ten riders, and the Sunday morning rides are short enough that nobody gets left behind.
Find your weekend
The hard part of most weekend trips from Bangalore is not the ghat. It is getting a group to agree on dates, book the stays, sort out the passes and leave at 5:30 on a Saturday. That is where RydrLoop helps. Post the trip, find riders with the same dates, and turn a group chat into a group that actually leaves on Saturday morning.
For shorter rides, our guide to one day bike trips from Bangalore covers the sunrise hills and waterfalls closer to the city. If you ride out of Delhi too, the same idea works in our guide to 2-day bike trips from Delhi.
Pick a weekend, book the passes, and be past Nelamangala before six.
