Split view of one day bike trips from Kochi: coast and backwater rides on one side, hill and waterfall rides on the other

Kochi gives riders two completely different kinds of day. Go west or south and you are on narrow roads between backwaters and the sea, past Chinese fishing nets, paddy fields below sea level and toddy shops serving karimeen fry. Go east and within two hours the road starts climbing into the Western Ghats, through rubber and cardamom, up to waterfalls and tea estates. That is the real appeal of trips from Kochi: the sea and the tea hills are both inside a single day.

This list gives you ten trips from Kochi, sorted by distance, from a 20 km coastal loop to a long day up to Thekkady. Each one has the road you take out of the city, an honest ride time and the Kerala detail that decides whether the day goes well.

Two warnings up front. Kerala's roads are busy, narrow and full of private buses that treat the speed limit as a suggestion, so ride defensively everywhere, not just in the hills. And Kerala watches its riders closely. More than 700 AI traffic cameras catch riding without a helmet, pillions without helmets and three on a bike, and the challans arrive whether or not a policeman saw you.

Bike trip distances from Kochi

Road distances for these trips from Kochi are measured from MG Road in Ernakulam, one way. Ride times assume an early start, Kerala traffic and one tea stop.

Short trips, under 70 km

  • Kumbalangi and Chellanam | about 20 km | 45 minutes | fishing nets and a sea wall road
  • Cherai and Munambam | about 30 km | 1 hour | a beach, a harbour and a 1503 fort
  • Marari | about 50 km | 1.5 hours | a fishing village beach
  • Bhoothathankettu and Thattekad | about 60 km | 1.75 hours | the Periyar and a bird sanctuary

Full day, 70 to 130 km

  • Athirappilly and Vazhachal | about 70 km | 2 hours | Kerala's biggest waterfall
  • Kuttanad and the AC Road | about 80 km | 2.5 hours | riding below sea level
  • Vagamon | about 100 km | 3 hours | pine forest and meadows at 1,100 m
  • Illikkal Kallu | about 110 km | 3 hours | a rock peak above Erattupetta
  • Munnar | about 121 km | 3.75 hours | the tea hill classic

The far edge

  • Thekkady | about 165 km | 4.5 hours | the Kottayam-Kumily ghat and Periyar

NH66 runs north and south along the coast, and it was being widened through 2025 and 2026, so expect diversions, dust and slow stretches. NH85 runs east through Kothamangalam toward Munnar, and NH544 runs north toward Chalakudy and Athirappilly.

Short bike trips from Kochi

1. Kumbalangi and Chellanam

Distance: About 20 km one way | Ride time: 45 minutes | Best for: A sunrise ride before work

South of Fort Kochi, Kumbalangi is a village of backwaters, mangroves and Chinese fishing nets, and the road on to Chellanam runs right along the coast. The newer sea wall at Chellanam, built with concrete tetrapods and a walkway on top, has become one of the best sunrise spots near the city.

It is the shortest of the trips from Kochi and the easiest to do before a working day.

Rider tip: The coastal road is narrow and busy with fish trucks in the early morning. Ride slowly and give them space.

2. Cherai and Munambam

Distance: About 30 km one way | Ride time: 1 hour | Best for: Backwater on one side, sea on the other

Cross the Goshree bridges to Vypin island and ride its length to Cherai, where the beach sits on a strip of land with backwater behind it. Keep going to Munambam at the northern tip for the fishing harbour, and stop at Pallipuram fort, built by the Portuguese in 1503 and often called the oldest surviving European fort in India.

Rider tip: The Vypin road is a single long, busy strip with many junctions. Watch for people stepping out from bus stops and shops without looking.

3. Marari

Distance: About 50 km one way | Ride time: 1.5 hours | Best for: A quiet beach and a long breakfast

Marari, just north of Alappuzha, is a fishing village with a wide, clean beach, far calmer than the city beaches. Ride down NH66, turn off at Mararikulam, have breakfast, and walk the beach while the fishing boats come in.

Rider tip: NH66 south of Kochi has been under heavy construction, with sudden diversions and loose gravel. Ride it in daylight, and be extra careful where the new and old lanes meet.

4. Bhoothathankettu and Thattekad

Distance: About 60 km one way | Ride time: 1.75 hours | Best for: River, forest and birds in one morning

Head east to Kothamangalam, and within an hour the road runs beside the Periyar into forest. Bhoothathankettu is a dam and a stretch of wide river with boating and forest walks. Thattekad, a few kilometres away, is the Salim Ali Bird Sanctuary, one of the richest birding spots in South India, where early mornings can bring hornbills, frogmouths and kingfishers.

Of all the short trips from Kochi, this is the one that feels furthest from the city.

Rider tip: Thattekad usually opens around 7 am, and the first two hours are the best for birds. Hire a local guide at the gate, because they know where every bird roosts.

Full-day bike trips from Kochi

5. Athirappilly and Vazhachal

Distance: About 70 km one way | Ride time: 2 hours | Best for: The biggest waterfall in Kerala

North on NH544 to Chalakudy, then east into the forest, and the road ends at Athirappilly, the largest waterfall in Kerala, where the Chalakudy river drops about 80 feet over a wide rock face. Vazhachal falls is a few kilometres further on. After the monsoon both are thunderous, and the spray reaches the viewpoints.

Rider tip: The falls sit inside a forest area, so plastic is checked and restricted. Beyond Vazhachal, the forest road toward Malakkappara and Valparai has a checkpost with daytime-only entry, and its rules for two-wheelers have changed over the years. Ask at the checkpost before you plan to ride through.

6. Kuttanad and the AC Road

Distance: About 80 km one way | Ride time: 2.5 hours | Best for: A ride through the rice bowl of Kerala

Ride to Alappuzha, then take the Alappuzha-Changanassery road, known as the AC Road, through Kuttanad. This is one of the few places in the world where farming happens below sea level, and the road runs on an embankment with paddy fields on one side and canals on the other. The rebuilt road now has several flyover sections, which give you a view right across the fields.

Rider tip: Kuttanad floods easily in heavy rain. Check the road before you go in the monsoon, and do not ride into standing water you cannot see the bottom of.

7. Vagamon

Distance: About 100 km one way | Ride time: 3 hours | Best for: Pine forests, meadows and hairpins

Take NH85 to Muvattupuzha, then Thodupuzha and Moolamattom, and from there the road climbs to Vagamon in a series of steep, tight hairpins. At the top you get pine forest, rolling grass meadows, tea estates and the Kurisumala hill. If you want a detour on the way, Thommankuthu falls near Thodupuzha has a short forest walk to a series of cascades.

Among the hill trips from Kochi, Vagamon is the best balance of distance and reward.

Rider tip: Fog rolls in over Vagamon most afternoons, often by three. Start back before it does, because the hairpins down to Moolamattom are hard work in fog and rain.

8. Illikkal Kallu

Distance: About 110 km one way | Ride time: 3 hours | Best for: A rock peak with a view of everything

Illikkal Kallu is a tall rock outcrop above Erattupetta, and on a clear day the view stretches across the Western Ghats and all the way to the coast. Ride through Pala and Erattupetta, and climb the narrow road to the checkpost.

Rider tip: Private vehicles stop at the checkpost about a kilometre below the summit. From there you walk or take a jeep, so wear shoes you can climb in. On windy or rainy days the top can be closed.

9. Munnar

Distance: About 121 km one way | Ride time: 3.75 hours | Best for: The tea hills everybody talks about

NH85 through Kothamangalam, across the old Neriamangalam bridge, and up past the Cheeyappara and Valara waterfalls, then the last hour of curves through tea estates into Munnar. It is the classic among hill trips from Kochi, and it is a long day if you do it out and back.

Rider tip: The stretch from Neriamangalam to Adimali has had roadwork and rough patches, and the hills around Munnar have wild elephants that walk the roads, especially near Mattupetty. Keep your distance and never try to ride past an elephant on the road. Wait.

The far edge

10. Thekkady

Distance: About 165 km one way | Ride time: 4.5 hours | Best for: A long ghat climb and the Periyar reserve

This is the far edge of one day trips from Kochi. Ride to Kottayam, then take the Kottayam-Kumily road, which climbs from Mundakayam through a long ghat section into spice country. At Thekkady, the Periyar Tiger Reserve has boat rides on the lake that need advance booking.

It is well over 300 km in a day, much of it slow, so only do it with an early start or, better, make it an overnight.

Rider tip: The ghat after Mundakayam carries buses and tourist traffic in both directions. Do not overtake on blind curves, however slow the vehicle ahead is.

Bike trips from Kochi for a weekend

Some trips from Kochi need a night away. A night away opens up these.

  • Munnar and Top Station | about 125 to 160 km | stay in Munnar and ride out to Top Station on the Tamil Nadu border
  • Valparai | about 150 km | tea country across the Tamil Nadu border, via the Athirappilly forest road if its rules allow you through, with the famous 40 hairpins down toward Pollachi
  • Wayanad | about 280 km | a long ride north to the coffee hills and the Thamarassery ghat

Planning your trips from Kochi

Before you sleep, tick these off.

Checklist
  • Tyres checked for pressure and tread
  • Brakes and chain looked over, because the hills are steep
  • Tank full before you leave the city
  • Licence, RC, insurance and PUC on you
  • Helmets for you and your pillion
  • Rain gear from June to November
  • No plastic bottles or bags for forest areas, or a plan to carry them back
  • Route and return time shared with someone at home

Kerala asks a few extra things of riders:

  • Respect the rain. Kerala gets two monsoons, the southwest from June to September and the northeast in October and November. On red alert days, the district administration can stop travel on hill roads, and it is the right call. A full pre-ride checklist the night before tells you if the bike is ready for wet roads.
  • Watch for buses. Private buses stop anywhere and pull out without looking. Never overtake one at a bus stop.
  • Know the camera rules. Helmets for both riders, no phone, no triple riding. Children above four also need a helmet on a two-wheeler.
  • Wear the gear. Humidity makes heavy gear hard work, but mesh jackets exist for exactly this. Our essentials for beginners covers what to look for.
  • Be honest about the distance. Munnar and back is around 240 km of slow road. If long hill days are new to you, see how to pick a ride that matches your skill level.
  • Riding in a group? Keep it small on Kerala roads. Big groups and private buses do not mix. Our group riding guide covers the rest.

When to go

September to March is the main season for trips from Kochi. Right after the monsoon, the waterfalls are full and the hills are green, and from December to February the high ranges are cool and clear. April and May are hot and humid on the coast but still pleasant in Munnar and Vagamon. June to August brings the heaviest rain. It is beautiful, but ride only on days without alerts and never into flooded roads.

Two rides are best timed deliberately. Athirappilly is at its most dramatic from August to October, and Thattekad is best from October to March, when migratory birds join the residents.

Common questions

Which is the best bike trip from Kochi for a beginner?

Cherai or Kumbalangi. Both are short, flat and close to the city. Bhoothathankettu is the natural next step before the hill rides. The mistakes new riders make on their first highway ride apply doubly on Kerala's busy roads.

Are there good bike rides within 50 km of Kochi?

Yes. Kumbalangi and Chellanam at about 20 km, Cherai at about 30 km and Marari at about 50 km are all short trips from Kochi you can finish by lunch.

How far is Munnar from Kochi by bike?

About 121 km on NH85, which takes around three and three quarter hours with stops. The last hour is all curves through tea estates.

Is it safe to ride to Munnar or Vagamon in the monsoon?

On normal rain days, yes, with care, good tyres and rain gear. On orange or red alert days, avoid the hill roads completely. Landslides and falling trees are a real risk, and the authorities often stop traffic.

What time should I leave Kochi for a hill ride?

By 5:30 or 6 am. You beat the city traffic and the buses, and you are heading back down before the afternoon fog and rain arrive.

Find your riding day

The hard part of most trips from Kochi is not the road. It is getting a group together and out of the city before the buses start. RydrLoop is built for that part. Post the ride, find riders going your way, and be across the city before the first bus pulls out.

If you are riding from somewhere else, the same idea works out of Bangalore, Chennai, Hyderabad and Mumbai.

Pick the coast or the hills, set the alarm, and go.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best time for bike trips from Kochi?
September to March. Right after the monsoon the waterfalls are full and the hills are green, and December to February is cool and clear in the high ranges.
Do Kerala's AI cameras fine bike riders?
Yes. The cameras record riding without a helmet, a pillion without a helmet, three people on a bike and phone use, and the challan is sent to the registered owner. Children above four also need a helmet.
Can I ride from Athirappilly to Valparai on a bike?
The forest road beyond Vazhachal toward Malakkappara has a checkpost with daytime-only entry, and the rules for two-wheelers have changed over the years. Ask at the Vazhachal checkpost before you plan to ride through.
How far is Vagamon from Kochi?
About 100 km via Muvattupuzha, Thodupuzha and Moolamattom. The last section is a steep climb with hairpins, so start early and head back before the afternoon fog.
Are there wild elephants on the Munnar roads?
Yes, especially around Mattupetty and some estate roads. If an elephant is on or near the road, stop well back, keep the engine running and wait for it to move off. Never try to ride past it.
